A small to medium sized diurnal snake, the Western Hognose reaches a maximum of 3 feet and uses its upturned nose to dig up amphibians and reptile eggs.

This species can be a little difficult to get feeding as a hatchling, as their diet is mostly lizard based in the wild. Sometimes it takes a little perseverance to get them to take defrosted rodents, but they get there eventually. Offer them one frozen rodent per week that has been defrosted overnight in a fridge then brought to room temperature. The food can either be offered to them using tongs or left in the vivarium for the snake to find.
Creating a suitable environment is critical for the well being of your snake.
Although they are a smaller species, a Western Hognose will appreciate a vivarium of at least 90cm long, larger if possible. As a diurnal snake they also benefit greatly from the provision of UV lighting. Keep the vivarium clean by removing solid waste as soon as possible, and regularly cleaning cage furniture and bowls with a reptile safe disinfectant.
